The need for quality insurance coding and billing service is increasing. As a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist student, you will learn the professional coding tools and billing practices that are required in your career. You will become a vital part of gathering information, which is necessary for the office, clinic, or hospital to run smoothly.

The Medical Billing and Coding Specialist is trained to work in physician practices, hospitals, and clinics. This program provides a generalized orientation to the healthcare fields, plus specific training in International Classification of Disease (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding, reimbursement and collection procedures, including various software applications. The student will also acquire knowledge of anatomy/physiology, disease process, professional communications skills, computer and keyboarding skills, diagnostic coding, and basic office skills. Upon completion of the program you should be prepared to work in entry-level positions in a physician’s office, clinic, hospital or other medical settings.
A graduate of the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Program will have a variety of job possibilities open to him or her. Examples of career-related jobs include, but are not limited to:

Required Immunizations
Measles live-virus vaccine
Students born during or after 1957 are required to have two doses of live measles vaccine given 1 month apart, or serologic evidence of immunity.
Persons vaccinated during 1963-1967 with a killed measles vaccine alone, killed vaccine followed by live vaccine, or with a vaccine of unknown type should be revaccinated with 2 doses of live measles virus vaccine.
Mumps live virus-vaccine
Students born during or after 1957 are required to have two doses of live mumps virus vaccine, given 28 days apart, or documentation from a physician of physician-diagnosed mumps, or serologic evidence of immunity. Because birth before 1957 is only presumptive evidence of immunity, Hamilton Technical College will require one dose of mumps virus vaccine for unvaccinated students born before 1957 who do not have evidence of mumps immunity.
Rubella live-virus vaccine
One dose is required for students who do not have documentation of having received live vaccine on or after their first birthday or laboratory evidence of immunity.
Hepatitis B vaccine
Two doses of hepatitis B vaccine 1 to 2 months apart with a third dose given 4 to 6 months after the first dose is recommended for students at risk for exposure to blood or body fluids. A waiver must be signed by those students refusing vaccination if they are students at risk for exposure to blood or body fluids.
Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis vaccine (Tdap)
One dose of Tdap vaccine is required
Varicella Zoster live-virus vaccine
Students must have at least one of the following
Documentation of two doses of varicella vaccine;
Blood tests showing immunity to varicella or laboratory confirmation of prior disease; or
Receipt from a healthcare provider of a) a diagnosis of chickenpox or herpes zoster (shingles); or b) verification of a history of chickenpox or herpes zoster (shingles).
TB Testing
Baseline TB testing for M. Tuberculosis infection is required for all students. A two-step TB skin test, or the QuantiFERON-TB Gold test (QFT-G) will be acceptable. TB testing must have been done within 12 months of the student’s clinicals.
Recommended immunizations
Seasonal influenza vaccination annually.
