Orion Technical College has proudly served the Quad Cities region with quality technical and allied health education since 1969. Originally founded as the Academy of Radio and Television (ART) in Bettendorf, Iowa, the college was established by Charles Hamilton, Jr. to prepare students for the Federal Communications Commission broadcasting exam. From these beginnings around a kitchen table, the institution expanded to meet evolving community and employer needs.
In 1978, the college introduced an Electronics program, reflecting the growing demand for skilled technical professionals. By 1980, with further program growth, the name changed to Hamilton Technical College. The 1990s brought further innovation with the launch of the Medical Assisting Technology program in response to healthcare workforce needs. In 2006, the Medical Billing and Coding program was added, enhancing the college’s healthcare offerings.
To better reflect a broader range of programs and the connection between its two campuses, the institution was renamed Orion Technical College in 2020. Today, Orion Technical College offers a comprehensive selection of diploma, associate, bachelor’s, as well as master’s degree programs in technology, and nursing. Programs are continually evaluated and updated through feedback from industry professionals to ensure graduates are prepared for in-demand careers.
The college remains committed to its mission: To Educate for a Rewarding Career, providing practical, career-focused training delivered by highly skilled faculty in modern facilities. Orion Technical College continues to empower students to reach their full potential and meet the needs of employers in the local and national workforce
