Group Exercise Certification

(9 weeks: 16 hours lecture, 16 hours practical)

Experience a group exercise course like no other! You will get nine weeks of intensive training to be your best. The program will include lecture materials AND practical skill lab demonstrations with interactive participation. These drills will expand into functional training, sports conditioning, circuit, boot camp, dance, step, kickboxing, hi-low and indoor cycling. A mind body class overview in yoga and Pilates will cap it off so you can have a functional knowledge of its value as you progress in your career. Lecture materials will cover the essentials of group exercise music, choreography, safety techniques, as well as basic applied science specifically relating to group exercise. A required 30-hour internship will help you network into employment in many cases. A valid CPR/AED card must be presented to get the certification issued.

Older Adult Specialist Certification

Get the training and education you need to serve the fastest growing fitness population in the US. This 38-hour course includes 9 hours of classroom lecture, 9 hours of practical training, testing, and a required 20-hour internship.This unique certification provides you with the specific knowledge and practical skills needed for working with older adult clientele. Learn what common ailments and physical conditions are germane to this special population and how to design age appropriate, fun and functional exercise programs. Pre-qualifier is a degree related to the field of study or a national fitness certification. CPR/AED is needed to receive the certificate. This course is recommended for 2 college credits by the American Council on Education.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the key age-related changes in physiology and fitness levels
  • Demonstrate safe and effective exercises for older adults.
  • Perform fitness assessments for older adults.
  • Design exercise prescriptions for older adults.
  • Market exercise programs to older adults.
This is an intermediate level course for students with experience or education in fitness training.

Methods of Instruction:
Lecture, demonstration, hands-on practice, practical skills assessments, final examination and 20-hour internship. Class is scheduled 6 hours/week (3 hours lecture/3 hours practical) for 3 weeks and the 4 week is for testing. Registered students receive course workbook and student study guide.

Completion Requirements:
Students must earn a score of 70% or higher on the written and practical exams. Attendance is also required and students are only allowed one excused absence. Students with an excused absence must schedule a make-up session and complete any work assigned. Adult CPR is required for the certification to be issued.

Endurance Exercises, Lifestyle Exercise, Training Guidelines, Strength Training, Chronic Diseases and Exercise, Conditions, Medications and Their Effect On Exercise

Low Back Pain, Posture, Balance, Lifetime Sports; Motivation, “Age-Friendly” and Ageless Business and Marketing

24 contact hours. Approved for 24 WITS CECs and 2.4 IACET and BOC CEUs. Recommended for 2 semester undergraduate credits by the American Council on Education.

Course Description
This free 1-hour Fitness Training Orientation is designed to provide information for anyone interested in the fitness profession or in becoming a nationally certified Group Exercise Instructor or Older Adult Fitness Specialist. This presentation includes a brief overview of the industry and professional trends, a look at the study materials while allowing ample time for a Q & A session. Topics include personal training, group fitness, older adult fitness, youth fitness, fitness management and aqua fitness.
